Adamou Ali hails from the North Region of the Republic of Cameroon and was born on 12 March 1948 in Libreville, Gabon.
After studying at the Faculty of Sciences at the Federal University of Yaounde from 1969 to 1970, he enrolled at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Angers, France, from 1970 to 1978, where he obtained a State Diploma in Pharmacy. From 1978 to 1980, he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in Angers, France, and obtained a Certificat d’Etudes Spéciales in Parasitology.
Prior to his appointment as a member of the Electoral Board in 2008, Dr Adamou Ali held the following positions:

•⁠ ⁠Pharmaceutical Assistant at the Northern Pharmacy in Garoua from 1980 to 1982;
•⁠ ⁠Partner of Mr Jean Marie Esclafit at the Northern Pharmacy in Garoua from 1982 to 1990;
•⁠ ⁠President of the Regional Council of the Order of Pharmacists in the Northern Region from 1987 to 2001;
•⁠ ⁠President of the Regional Association of Pharmacists in the Northern Region from 1987 to 2007;
•⁠ ⁠Permanent member of the National Order of Pharmacist of Cameroon, “Division A” from 1990 to 1994;
•⁠ ⁠Proprietor and Director of Pharmacie du Nord in Garoua from 1990 to 2007;
•⁠ ⁠Independent member of the Joint Divisional Supervisory Commission for Elections from 1992 to 2002;
•⁠ ⁠Director of Laborex Cameroun, ‘Groupe Euro Pharma France’, from 1992 to 2007, mandate renewed until 2010;

•⁠ ⁠Provincial representative of the President of the National Council of the Order of Pharmacists of Cameroon;
•⁠ ⁠Divisional Chairman of the National Elections Observatory for Benoué, the body responsible for supervising and monitoring elections in Cameroon from 2002 to 2006;
•⁠ ⁠Chairman of the Provincial Representation of the National Elections Observatory for the North Region in 2007.
Dr Adamou Ali is a member of several civil society organisations, including:

•⁠ ⁠Lions Club International from 1990 to 2007, where he served as President of Region 22 of District 403 B from 2003 to 2004;
•⁠ ⁠Board member of Lycée Classique et Moderne de Garoua, where he represented the civil society from 2002 to 2007;
•⁠ ⁠Kanuri Cultural Association of Cameroon, where he served as National President from 2002 to 2007.

On 29 January 2009, he took the following oath before the Supreme Court sitting as the Constitutional Council: “I swear to fully and faithfully discharge my duties and to exercise my office without fear or favour in accordance with the Constitution and laws in force, to ensure the confidentiality of proceedings and votes, to abstain from taking public positions and to decline any consultation on matters falling within the purview of Elections Cameroon.”
