2025 Presidential Election: Board members scrutinise candidacy files

In accordance with the provisions of Section 123 of the Electoral Code, Candidacy papers must be submitted in duplicate, within 10 (ten) days of the date of convening of electors.

Candidacy files are submitted to the Directorate General of Elections. They may also be submitted to the Regional Delegations of Elections Cameroon, which forward them to the Directorate General of Elections within twenty-four (24) hours.

After this phase of receiving candidacy files, which ended at midnight on 21 July, the Electoral Board began on 23 July 2025 to scrutinise the 83 files forwarded by the Director General of Elections.

In accordance with Section 10, paragraph 2, of the Electoral Code, the Electoral Board        scrutinises candidacy papers and publishes the final list or lists of candidates contesting presidential, legislative, senatorial, regional and municipal elections.

In the same connection, Section 125 stipulates that the Electoral Board may accept or reject a candidacy file. The Director General of Elections notifies the person concerned of the reasoned decision to reject a candidacy.

In accordance with Section 126, at least sixty (60) days before the date of the election, the Electoral Board draws up and publishes the list of candidates. The Constitutional Council is immediately notified.

It is therefore not the responsibility of the Director General of Elections to rule on the admissibility of a candidacy file.

It is important to note that Elections Cameroon operates within the framework of the law. Section 4 of the Electoral Code clearly stipulates that Elections Cameroon carries out its duties in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws and regulations in force.
